Spotlight Hotel Investment Poland II

The Spotlight Hotel Investment Poland conference, which took place in June, brought together investors, developers, hotel operators and finance providers to discuss the issues affecting the hotel sector, including development, finance, management and acquisition potential. The event attracted just over 200 hotel and hospitality decision makers from around Europe. The conference took place at the Westin Hotel and the post-conference cocktail party took place at the Sofitel Victoria Hotel.

Miguel Martins, IHG

Miguel is responsible for developing IHG’s brands in Poland for both franchised and managed hotels. Miguel has extensive experience in hotel development and has been involved in over 30 projects in Europe. He also has over nine years of experience working on the Holiday Inn Express brand in Portugal, Northern Spain and Poland.
Prior to joining IHG, Miguel created the Polish Hotel Company which was responsible for the development of the Holiday Inn Express brand in Poland.  Miguel oversaw Holiday Inn Express Warsaw Airport from its conceptual design, financing, coordination with IHG and construction surveying, right through to its pre-opening and management.

Andrzej Wójcik, SATORIA Group S.A.

Responsible for Sales, Marketing and Business Development in SATORIA Group Inc. Since 1999, hold a position of a Vice-President of SATORIA Group Inc. (former PUHIT Inc.) a group of companies operating in the sphere of hotels and commercial properties in Poland, mainly located in Warsaw and Cracow. He is also the president of the board of RT Hotels Inc. in Cracow and VHM Hotel Management – a captive companies of SATORIA Capital Group. Graduated from the annual Executive Development scheme at the Canadian International Management Institute and the post-graduate studies of Warsaw School of Economics – Goodwill Management. He has gained his business experience and corporate management practice while in various companies on the Polish market. Apart from professional work he actively goes in for sailing, skiing and tennis, is interested in history and cinematography.


Wojciech Liszka, MPI Poland

Wojciech loves challenges and ambitious projects. The more demanding they are - the better. He began his career in the biggest casino in the world - Foxwoods Resorts Casino in Conncecticut, USA. In Poland, for 11 years he was associated with a prestigious brand Radisson Blu hotels in Szczecin, Warsaw and Krakow.
Founder and CEO of Z—Factor, the company specializing in providing modern tools for hospitality, such as: Meetings Outlook (benchmarking online conference system) or the Test Call program (system testing and improving the efficiency of sales).
The originator and the initiator of Poland Business Run - a charity sporting event, and now Poland's largest relay race. Initiator of the Meetings Week Poland, currently the largest meetings industry event in the country.

Dr. Rudolf Grossmayer, UBM Realitätenentwicklung Aktiengesellschaft

R. Grossmayer started 1972 his professional career as assistant professor at Technical University Vienna and for one year at Caltech, Pasadena, USA. In 1980 he joined BP group as project manager in engineering and later he built up a new company in energy management/alternative energy. In 1989 he joined ATP, Achammer, Tritthart & Partner, archiects and engineers, as partner, where he acted as executive director in their subsidiaries in Vienna, Innsbruck, Munich and Dresden and managed several projects for office towers, shopping centers, industrial plants, hotels and hospitals. In 2001 he joined the UBM group as business development manager and since then acts as managing director in several subsidiary companies mostly as joint ventures, developing hotels, business parks, office towers and healthcare facilities in the regions of Austria, Poland and France. The management duties cover the whole development from land acquisition, design & build, leasing, asset management until final sale of project.


Stephane Obadia, Algonquin

Stéphane Obadia has been Head of Acquisitions for Algonquin since 2008, having carried investments in over 35 hotel properties in the past 6 years. Stéphane started his career in structured real estate finance at Credit Agricole Indosuez, before joining LaSalle Investment Management in Paris. Stéphane then joined Groupe du Louvre in 2002 where he was in charge of European expansion for the Louvre Hotels brands, also heading a joint venture operation between Starwood capital and Warimpex focusing on Central and Eastern Europe hotel developments.
Stephane graduated from HEC (Paris) in 2000. 

Gonçalo Duarte Silva, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Poland

Gonçalo Duarte Silva was appointed Area Manager of Starwood Hotels & Resorts in Poland in 2013. He coordinates operations of Sheraton hotels in Warsaw, Krakow, Poznan and Sopot as well as The Westin Warsaw and Hotel Bristol, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Warsaw. His professional life is dedicated to hospitality business, and since 1996 has been connected with Starwood brands. Gonçalo Duarte Silva has worked on various positions from Food & Beverage via Operations to top management. His experience includes also Six Sigma projects, which goal is to achieve significant improvements in processes and maximize results. Before joining Starwood in Poland he was The General Manager of Le Méridien Barcelona, which is one of the flagship hotels of the brand.  Gonçalo Duarte Silva has a solid experience in the hospitality industry which he gained in many famous international hotels such as Westin Palace, Madrid, Penina Golf & Resort Hotel in Algarve, Portugal or Le Meridien Barcelona. 

Rune Askevold, Puro Hotels

Rune Askevold is a Norwegian citizen. He started his career working within the international banking- and shipping industry. In 2003 he became a hotelier and has for the last 8 years been the Managing- and Creative Director of Puro Hotels Sp. z o.o. – the first Polish lifestyle hospitality brand. Mr. Askevold is married and has 3 sons. 


Krzysztof Celuch, Poland Convention Bureau

Krzysztof joined the meetings industry as a tour leader for a number of DMCs in 2000. As a journalist over a period of six years he published more than 100 articles about the meetings and events industry. Krzysztof graduated from Academy of Physical Education (M.A.) and got Ph.D. in political science from Warsaw University.
Besides his active role in MPI Poland Club (President 2009-2011) and as international volunteer in MPI International Board of Directors (2012-2015), he is a vice-rector at Warsaw School of Tourism and Hospitality Management (Vistula University Group). He organizes a student conference: IMEX-MPI-MCI Future Leaders Forum Warsaw and he serves as a jury chairman for MICE Poland Personality of the Year competition and MeetingPlanner Power Award. He is a visiting professor at San Diego State University and Warsaw University.
Krzysztof has spoken at numerous events including seminars at EIBTM, IMEX and international conferences of different industry associations (Site, ICCA, MPI). Since 2006 he has been working in destination marketing. Currently he is the head of Poland Convention Bureau, which is a part of the Polish Tourist Organisation.

Martin Schaller, MRICS, Union Investment Real Estate GmbH

Martin Schaller is a graduate in business management (FH), a qualified real estate economist (IRE|BS), hotel manager (IHK) and member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS). Schaller has more than 15 years experience in the hotel and real estate industry and has studied, hotel, real estate and tourism management at universities in Germany, Sweden and the USA. Following his education, Schaller gained extensive experience in the operational hotel business at Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, among others. Schaller has been specialising in hotel real estate since 2004 and provided support for a number of hotel transactions at the international real estate consultancy company Christie + Co. As a Senior Investment Manager for Hotels, Schaller was responsible for hotel transactions as well as in particular implementing the investment strategy in budget hotels at Union Investment from 2009 to 2014. In 2012 and 2013, as Hotel Investment Manager, Schaller was responsible for the design, launch and start-up phase of the first sector fund for hotels at Union Investment, the UII Hotel No. 1. Schaller has an extensive network of hotel operators and project developers and has been able to position Union Investment as a leading investor in budget hotels in the open-ended real estate funds provider segment over the last few years. Schaller has been leading the Asset Management Hotel group at Union Investment since October 2014 and with his team of specialists is responsible for a portfolio with 43 hotel real estate properties in 8 countries across Europe and a volume of roughly EUR 2.3 billion in total.


Christian Hribar, Worldhotels

Christian Hribar is a true hospitality and tourism expert with over 25 years experience in sales, marketing and business development. He joined Worldhotels in March 2014 as Director Hotel Development for Germany/Austria/Switzerland and Eastern Europe. In his role, he is in charge of growing Worldhotels’ portfolio of affiliated and branded hotels in this region. Since mid 2014 he has also been overseeing the development of the Worldhotels brand in the Baltic States as well as Turkey, Cyprus and Greece. 
Prior to joining Worldhotels, Christian was part of the Management Team of the Geisel Privathotels in Munich, where he was responsible for business development for the group’s four hotels. Prior to that, he has worked for Preferred Hotels for over eleven years and opened the regional office in Munich for Central Europe as the group’s Regional Director. He has also worked in several key regional positions for companies like Radisson/Rezidor and Sheraton. 

Murat YILMAZ, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc.

Murat YILMAZ joined as Senior Director, Acquisitions & Development for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. in 2012 and is responsible for sourcing and executing the growth strategy of Starwood’s portfolio of ten brands in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Turkey, Poland and other Central European markets. He is based in Starwood’s Regional Development Office in Istanbul, Turkey.
Before joining the Starwood Acquisition & Development team, he was with Dedeman Hotels & Resorts International as Chief Business Development Officer.
With over 26 years of experience in hotel and real estate business, Murat has worked for Hilton, Dorint, Renaissance and JW Marriott Hotels in Germany, Hungary, Romania, Russia and Kazakhstan in operations before joining Capital Partners as Director Hotel Business Development and Asset Management where he was responsible for asset management and new hotel development in Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkey. 
Murat is a graduate of the Hotelfachschule Koblenz / Germany and has a Hotel Real Estate Investment and Asset Management certificate from Cornell University.

Michał Olszewski, Vice Mayor, City of Warsaw

Born in 1977 in Bydgoszcz. Graduated from Faculty of Journalism and Political Science University of Warsaw. Since October 2011, Deputy Mayor of Warsaw, before Director of European Funds Department. As a Deputy Mayor he is responsible for development strategy of Warsaw. He also supervises European funds, economic development, housing, environmental protection, sport and geodesy.


Dorota Latkowska, REINO Partners

Dorota Latkowska, MRICS, is a Founding Partner of investment management company REINO Partners. She has over 19 years of a wide-ranging property experience working for Price Waterhouse and than heading capital markets team of Knight Frank where she was also the Proprietary Partner. She has been involved in different types of investment deals, fund raising and debt financing with the total value exceeding EUR 2.5 bln in CEE. She has worked with most of investors active on the Polish market. In REINO Partners together with her partners she has created the unique structure allowing Polish high net worth individuals investing in institutional office buildings through REINO Dividend funds with the first acquisition completed in October last year (Kapelanka in Krakow) and further ongoing.


Astrid Schafleitner, Motel One Development GmbH

Astrid Schafleitner joined the development team of the expanding hotel group Motel One in 2011. She holds the position of Director Development and as such is responsible for the expansion of Motel One in South Germany, Austria and CEE. Ms Schafleitner graduated in Business Science from the University of Linz, and has gained comprehensive operational hotel experience, among others, with the highly regarded hotel consultancy group PKF hotelexperts.


Agnieszka Starczewska, Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego

Agnieszka Starczewska is Head of Local Finance, Department of European Programs in the state-owned Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego. Agnieszka joined BGK in 2007 as expert in Project Finance Department and was involved in financing the Polish defence industry, than concentrated on international projects, including hotel developments. Since 2012 she is responsible for financing urban projects within the initiative JESSICA (Joint European Support for Sustainable Investment in City Areas), a policy of the European Commission developed jointly with the EIB. Before joining BGK,  Agnieszka collected experience in shipping industry, then  held a position of a Financial Controller in one of Nestle’s companies. 


Magdalena Sekutowska, Hilton Worldwide

A graduate of the University of Michigan and New York University, Magdalena Sekutowska has both finance and development experience.  She worked on financing numerous energy projects in North America at Credit Suisse Investment Banking.  She then moved to structure real estate projects in North America and the Caribbean at Starwood Hotels & Resorts.  After developing full-service hotels in North America, for the last six years Magdalena has developed hotels at Hilton Worldwide in Europe. She is currently based in Warsaw and her focus is on developing the Hilton portfolio of hotel brands in Central and Eastern Europe, mainly in  Poland, the Czech and Slovak Republics.


Jakub Klimczak, STR Global, London

Jakub Klimczak is Business Development Manager at STR Global based in London. Jakub joined STR Global in 2014 to lead development of the Central and Eastern European region. STR and STR Global track supply and demand data for the hotel industry and provide valuable market share analysis for international, regional hotel chains and independent hotels. Jakub Klimczak has ten years of professional experience in the hospitality industry, within the field of Revenue Management at various London hotels, including Intercontinental Hotels Group and Hilton . He played an instrumental role in driving hotel revenues over the period of recession and maximizing on an opportunity provided by London 2012 Olympic Games.He holds an Honours Degree in Business Administration from City University of Seattle and Postgraduate Certificate in Management from University of Westminster. 


Wojciech Szybkowski, CMS, CEE Hotels & Leisure Group

Wojciech Szybkowski is a partner at CMS and Head of the Firm’s CEE Hotels & Leisure Group. Wojciech advises a range of international clients in the hotel, leisure and commercial real estate sectors. His clients include investors, developers, operators and lenders. Wojciech handles legal aspects of acquisitions and disposals, development, financing and operational issues. He has also significant experience in restructuring matters. He assists clients on projects in Poland and other CEE countries. He is based in Warsaw.


Bruno Leroy, Choice Hotels Franchise GmbH

Bruno Leroy is in charge of portfolio growth at the Choice Hotels’ Munich based office overlooking Germany and Central Europe. Born and raised in France, he graduated in Tourism Management at the University of Savoy in Chambéry, France. In the past 15 years, he collected experience in airline business as well as incoming tourism in Scotland and Germany. Before joining Choice in 2009, Bruno supported sales activities for two hotels in Munich. He speaks French, German and English. 


Gilles Clavie, Orbis SA

Gilles Clavie is 44 years old. He began his professional career as a consolidation and group financial reporting Manager in Eridania Beghin-Say in 1993. He joined Accor Group in Paris in 2001 as Reporting Director for the business and leisure hotels segment. He held a position of a Financial Controller in Accor in the years 2004 through 2010. 
Gilles Clavie joined Orbis S.A. as a member of the Executive Committee of the Company in January 2011. He has been responsible for strategy, management control, IT systems implementation and asset management. Gilles Clavie also created and has been heading a Property Management Committee which concentrated on in-depth analysis of various investment projects as regards development, asset management, construction and maintenance. He was appointed a President of the Management Board & CEO of Orbis SA on June 27th 2014.
